BioWare have assured prospective players that the storyline bringing the player's character into the game will change depending on race and background, meaning that there will hopefully be no generic, sweeping statements about the player made by NPCs on a regular basis.

Magic will require the use of Mana, and more specialised classes only become accessible at higher levels, but the PC is still fully customisable. It's important to note that both the setting and the engine for this game are new, created for this purpose the game does not use the AD&D ruleset. Though the main camera angle for the exploring and interacting portion of the game will apparently be in third person closer to the party, during combat a top-down view will be available, allowing the player to pause-and-play and utilise strategy. Romances, friendships and rivalries may erupt between the PC and the party NPCs to a level not before seen in Bioware games, giving the term "party interaction" a whole new meaning. Hearkening back to the Baldur's Gate series, Dragon Age will let the player have a party of game-made NPCs travel with them these NPCs will have their own personalities and preferences as in other games such as KoTOR, but the player will be able to have full control over their actions, especially during battle. Set in the entirely new world of Fereldan, DA:O is slated to be a dark, mature and gritty fantasy with an emotionally gripping, epic plot the likes of which RPG gamers have not yet seen in a long time. Dragon Age: Origins is a CRPG currently in development by BioWare, described by the developers as a "spiritual successor" to the Baldur's Gate series.
